Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

We've done three more sessions, during which they've continued to unravel the conspiracy behind the murders (I kept rolling random murders happening at the end of every investigation day so what was supposed to be one murder has turned into not just five murders, but a plot to frame the PCs for them...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

Two more sessions, one two weeks ago and another Sunday. We ran Ruins of Ramat two weeks ago and it was pretty much a disaster. It ended in a TPK despite my best efforts. The party took on the demon even though it was clearly suicide. One guy had the absolute of always getting into fights with peopl...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

Ah yeah, forgot about the adversary die.

I had the PCs go over "what did you learn from the investigation" and explained to them about the adversary die.

The adversary die was a d20. They were so disappointed in themselves when it only went down to a d14.

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

I ran the third session on Sunday. It was just a straight dungeon crawl through a variant of The Portal Under the Stars. It turned out to be super-deadly, mostly because of a couple of added/changed monster encounters I put in. Only one PC (of seven) survived, but for the grace of the Judge (I decid...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

The reason I decided to do the S&S hack first was to show how TA can be used in different genres, give examples of how to hybridize the classes, and offer something in relation to spellcasting for the time being. My original plan was to circle back to the monsters and setting. The reason for th...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

The very first offering is a bit of book 3 (The Transylvanian Grimoire). It's a Sword & Sorcery setting hack. Sounds pretty good to me. I have another campaign that I could use that in . . . The next thing I was planning on writing was the Monsters. But you'd rather have the spells? Argh, a tou...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

Regarding the future publishing model referenced on the blog, I'd like to vote for the magic system. There are references to 0-level rituals and quickcast spells in the existing classes, and I'd like to be able to answer questions about them if my players ask when they're choosing a class. They will...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

I've run two sessions of TA so far and just wanted to tell you how it went. The first was near the end of November. We had character creation and it was definitely the hit of the session. Everyone loved the "mad libs" parts and people couldn't stop laughing as they read "My Story.&quo...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

Thanks for the answers! Also, I love how my name for the Reaver class saw print! There was one more thing I meant to ask that I forgot: is there a reason why PCs reroll max hit points at the beginning of every adventure? Seems like a lot of unnecessary rolling for little payback. I can see some inte...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

Bought my PDF and have read it over. Doing the first session next weekend. I really enjoyed it (as I thought I would) but I have a few questions: 1) About skills, is a PC considered "trained" (i.e., roll d20 vs. d10) in all the skills in which he has bonuses? Since you write that the class...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

*SPOILERS, POTENTIAL PLAYERS DON'T READ* Just finished reading the adventure this morning and I love it! Not too sure on the lethality of camping outside, though - seems a bit . . . sudden. I think if I ran it I would give the PCs a lot of hints throughout the night - "you're getting cold, dang...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

I haven't finished reading the adventure yet (although I'm liking it thus far except for the occasional typo), but like Kevin I skipped to the pregens, and I had a similar feeling about them. I thought it was maybe because we weren't getting full disclosure about all of the class abilities, and it w...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

We need a QuickStart for Free RPG Day.

A short adventure, basic rules so we can play it, and a handful of pregens. 32 pgs or so.

Yeah, I don't ask for a lot

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

I think it really depends on the page counts, and what's in them. Three books would be good with me. It would keep the price for each down. If monsters are the issue, we could have a 3rd book of just monsters, with only a handful in Adventures (call 'em "example monsters" - the most classi...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

The only class names I really don't like are the charger, valiant, and the redeemable, because none really seem to evoke what these classes are about. It's difficult because we know so little about the book so far (relatively). But let's try to think of some other names. Some of these have been ment...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

Thanks for the ToC and the other blog post! I really like the idea that only 1 in 3 sessions might be a dungeon crawl - really lends itself to the type of games I like to run. Can we get a few details on how investigation and research work in the game, mechanically?

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

As far as what I'd like to see on the blog, I really like the posts about playtests, and I'd like to revisit some of the earlier character classes (prior to the class overhaul). The playtest posts have been pretty informative. I really want a feel for the characters people are making, not necessaril...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

The Survivor is kind of like the person that already survived something. The Valiant fits the mold of the typical horror protagonist. . . . There's some fertile ground for cross-upgrading a Valiant and a Survivor, no doubt. The genre definitely supports taking one and morphing it towards the other....

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

The Redeemable, of course :) Also, I love the name of the Survivor - reminds me of the Character Type in All Flesh Must Be Eaten - the type of person who has the best chance of surviving the zombie apocalypse. Speaking of which, aside from Mina, what other horror fiction characters could be Survivor...

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

I love the way multiclassing works! Are there restrictions, like you can only take cross-class upgrades at x, y, and z levels, or you can only take cross-class upgrades from so many classes?

Re: 2012: Transylvanian Adventures & The Transylvanian Grimo

This may or may not be related to the blog post, but I really want to know how multiclassing works. Is there a unified xp table (a la 3e) or is there a variable xp table (DCC RPG) for each class? And, either way, how does multiclassing work? Is it like Castles & Crusades (i.e. you add xp goals f...
