Re: Two weapon fighting backstab

I would run it that you can Backstab with two weapons. Rolling a d16 as an attack puts you at a pretty big disadvantage as the average roll is 9, which is under most ACs. It can obviously be juiced up with Luck easily enough but that's a lot of resources going into a single attack: a round to get i...

Re: any mushroom tables?

Not a table, but Fungi of the Far Realms is a 200+ page supplement of fantasy mushrooms. It's system neutral so would be up to you to determine specifics, but it has anything you could ever want.

When giving out Luck as an award, I treat those bonuses as restorative for Thieves and Halflings. Anything that would bring them over their max is temporary luck.

Re: Restoring STA Points -- Potions? Spells?

They could use extended downtime to do some deep rest/training that restores a few points of stamina. Of course, a long break means a lot of nights in the tavern, not the mention the cost of the training. You could also make this a quest itself. The Genie idea could interesting - the party finds the...

Re: How do you introduce and run "Quest for It"?

Know this is an old topic, but posting an answer in case newbies are wondering about this same question. The idea of questing for it should be introduced during character creation. Simply tell the players that the class rules are a starting point but that additional, unique abilities can be unlocked...

Re: Judge wannabe

My rule for encumberance is to limit the number of items a character can carry to their strength score. We use some custom rules to track rations and torches, but we count stuff like that in bundles vs. individually tracking the number - ie, a bundle of torches is 1 item against that limit. Things l...

Re: Dark but not too dark...

I think there's a lot of things you can do to offset it. NPCs. Make the initial sessions have NPCs that communicate this mix of despair and hope. Attach adventures to the despair side, adventurers to the hope side. We can make it another day/week/month/year if you could just. . . When they win, make...

Re: New here, some questions

My advice for designing encounters is to think concept/narrative first and make the creatures live up to their reputation (most of the time, keep them guessing by using false rumors to undermine expectations occasionally, too). Bandits aren't feared because they're well trained high level brutes but...

Re: Metal Gods of Ur-Hadad #4-6: Abandoned Kickstarter?

Small creative projects like these are extremely susceptible to delays because, as others have noted, there are so many things that can happen to throw timelines off. Real life stuff like employment or relationship changes, as well as game-adjacent stuff like playtesting taking longer, gaming groups...

Hubris Druid Class Question

Planning on using some of the content in the Hubris book for my next campaign and had some questions on the Druid class, specifically the Call of the Animal ability. 1. Mountain Lion and Wolf both affect ability dice. My interpretation of this is that it applies to rolls based on those abilities vs....

Mighty Deeds: Defensive Maneuvers Hack

For my next campaign, I'm thinking of modifying how Mighty Deeds work when using them defensively. The idea would be that the Warrior declares they are taking a Defensive stance during their turn and then, when an enemy takes their action, they can declare their deed. Additionally, they can interven...

Re: New Class: Monk

It just feels outside of the monk class. Edit: But that's just how I feel about it. If it works for you and your group, then go for it. For the flurry of blow dice... I had another thought. Getting a high # of attacks and high AC at the same time might be too much. Maybe the AC bonus is the reverse...

Re: New Class: Monk

Mechanically its a little clunky. Flurry of blows dice, halfling agility of two weapon fighting, acrobatics die. These all feel like they could be simplified under one mechanic somehow. I'm not a big fan of the blessing. I'm just not sure they'd be buffing their allies. Edit: I would have one die r...

New Class: Monk [Revised]

As I gear up for my next campaign, I'm looking to introduce a few "new" classes to the campaign - one of them being Monk. There are a few versions of DCC Monks floating around the internet, but I felt they strayed too far from the core of DCC so I took a stab at my own and I'm looking for ...

Re: Circle of Mages

The book does imply that Ritualized versions of spells are actually different spells than their normal variants. I don't know that I'd go so far as to say they need to learn the Ritualized version, but notes on how to conduct the spell as part of a circle of mages makes for nice loot/a good adventur...

Re: Adding Skills

I’m generally uninterested in GM fiat as a solution... This right here might be the disconnect. Let me be as clear as I possibly can. I would never tell you how you should play. But I can say with some experience that DCC was kinda built on the idea that there are a lot of places (skills being one ...

Re: Adding Skills

Character rolls skill untrained -> character notes that skill on their sheet -> character levels up and chooses one of those untrained skills to be designated as trained going forward Right, but why? Why can that character just choose to suddenly be skilled in that, and why *only* that versus anyth...

Re: Let's Talk About Spellburn

Remember that every "1" means that a point of Spellburn is permanently lost. In addition, there is a table of Spellburn actions that you can use to complicate things. I don't know if my players have gotten extremely lucky, but I don't think this has happened a single time in a year of pla...

Re: Let's Talk About Spellburn

How does a d30 make things worse? I bought DCC over a year ago and was thinking of using it to start my new campaign. After reading through it I loved the hell out of it but it had a number of holes IMO. What you’ve been describing was one of them. It presents itself has far more deadly yet there’s...

Re: Adding Skills

Sounds a little complicated and arbitrary to me. In particular, I don't see what relationship rolling an untrained skill would necessarily have with later learning that skill? Also, people do lose skills that are unused or if they get dumber (it happens), so I would actually support a system where ...

In this case, they've been at sea before and have definitely swam as well. Basically, I'm willing to suspend some of the ways I would normally work so not immediately destroy them as this is the first encounter of a series of encounters in the final dungeon. Good point on the damage - all attacks an...

Re: Let's Talk About Spellburn

They have definitely encountered something after an adventure "ends" that was a challenge and where a Wizard would have been helpful. I don't also know that it's a solution to throw curveballs at them all the time after a boss. All campaigns have downtime and there are only so many times y...

Re: Let's Talk About Spellburn

For myself, I'd go a simpler route and suggest that the bigger the spellburn, the more attention you draw. I created the Anti-Matternaut in the first run of the GFA as an example of that. Maybe there are a multitude of creatures that are drawn in various ways by the fluctuations in the phlogiston w...

Let's Talk About Spellburn

I've been playing DCC RPG on and off since it was released. I've played long campaigns, modules, one-shots, etc. No matter the arrangement, I've found one thing to be true: Wizards break the game. This isn't a unique problem to DCC. In every edition of D&D I've played Wizards eventually become d...
