Re: Old School versus 4E
You've mentioned that there may be "optional" rules towards the end of the book. My suggestion is that instead you make this explicit and then use that space to give examples of modifying the game for your home campaign. Incorporate those optional rules into the various examples. That way ...

Re: Cleric Spells and "Class Die"
caveman, I assume class die would follow the same progression for all classes. Starting with d3 at first level and increasing by one die size per level thereafter.

Re: Cleric Spells and "Class Die"
I tried to write it so there was only a 1 in 3 shot of a cleric losing lay-on-hands at first level. Assuming a +1 Personality bonus the cleric will have a 58% of a success on the attempt, so only a 13% chance of never getting one off (failure plus a roll of 1) and on average he'd get two uses a day....

Re: Game vs. Story
Exactly. Rules are really there to allow players a way to impact the world. Otherwise everything is just DM fiat. With a great DM and storyteller that can be awesome, but it can also be horrible. I actually think this is something 4E did right. The rules were both broad enough to cover most of the c...

Re: Cleric Spells and "Class Die"
Correct, that was my thought. Just another way to make things unique. Also, as it is one constant chart it could go right on the character sheet.
Heck, you could even customize the effects for different deities. Perhaps some have variable modifiers for certain spells, or other side effects...

Re: Game vs. Story
I don't think video games are really the culprit. I do think that organized play across a large audience tends to lead to rules bloat. There is a desire to have the experience be positive no matter what table you sit and and who runs the game. One thing that is negative is when a tactic that succeed...

Cleric Spells and "Class Die"
I posted this in another thread, but it was correctly noted as a tangent. So here is a place to discuss. My preference is still that Clerics work a bit differently than wizards for spell casting. For example, I'd like to see the following for a Cleric's class die roll with every spell: 1 - Faith tes...

Re: "Limiting" Corruption
Tons of new to read and respond to in this thread! Mixing input metaphors, here is my down and dirty $0.02 drive-by: I do like the idea of a class die for spell retention, a lot. I also agree that a similar numerical result on a higher level spell should be a clearly better result; two character lev...

I'm sure most folks here aren't following the adventure in the forum over at RPGGeek, but in passing we just had one of the greatest phrases ever: "mighty vagrant thews" http://rpggeek.com/article/7130386#7130386 Actually, the thread is a great example of how folks approach the funnel. A s...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
Lets look at the -1 on success (or even -1 no matter success or failure) Glad I asked! From your reply I took it to mean that it didn't work to change the rule as written from a -1 on any attempt to a -1 on success only. To me that implied you were advocating sticking with the rule in the beta. Sou...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
Good to know, did you find it made the cleric too powerful/reliable? I'm curious how it didn't hold up. Right now I'm just trying to figure out how to tweak the game to maintain player interest so it isn't perceived as "endless game of grind and despair". Everyone is all for the level 0 fu...

Re: Poisons & Diseases
My thought is that this is exactly why I proposed a dirt simple basic rule. I think all your ideas are interesting and thematic, but best left to inclusion in specific monster/setting descriptions. Those sorts of things are easily popped into a campaign when appropriate, but seem like a lot of rules...

Re: BETA: What has been learned?
I'm not sure you understand my point or possibly I've misunderstood Joseph's point. You spend a Luck point which under the current rules would be permanently gone. But under the proposed rules, the player would know they'll get that spent luck point back the next time they roll a fumble. On average...

Re: Alternate physical levels
As written the game routinely applies permanent stat loss. I'm just looking for rules to balance that so that characters over time actually gain a bit of power as they gain levels instead of getting progressively weaker.

Re: Luck Kind of Sucks
I think it goes mostly to the (lack of) survivability of 0-level characters. This was a group of 10 characters of which 7 were level 0. One of the level 1 characters fell, but the other two were uninjured in the encounter. Level 0 characters tend to die on the first hit a lot... I will say that the ...

Re: BETA: What has been learned?
My recommendation is to focus on the core rules and a few key variants with a thought to what systems are easily substituted with a pop-in replacement. A new set of occupation charts? Easy to pop-in. New spells? East to pop-in. A different Halfling for those of us inspired by Tolkein? Easy to pop-in...

Re: Magic Items
I think that the base rules should not allow for making permanent items and should not provide a gold price for them. Those should always be by DM control/design and giving numbers encourages a marketplace view of things. But, I also don't want restrictions on how I run my adventures. If I want char...

Re: BETA: What has been learned?
Joseph, Thanks for the update! Any feedback on the comments that right now the game results in Luck and Ability score death spirals? I've found that a typical character in my campaign is losing a few luck and a permanent ability score about every other session, if they don't die entirely. Actually, ...

Re: Poisons & Diseases
I have nothing against special diseases and poisons when they are adding to the story. Given that the early RPGs that DCC is somewhat modeled on had a poison mechanism where you made one saving throw (with modifier for poison's strength) and a failure was death, well, I thought this was pretty fair....

Really hope there is a rules update. I almost feel like there is no point posting about the game as you have no idea what/if anything is being considered or what alterations have been made... I'd be happy with just a thumbs up or down to various ideas that have been floated so we know which discuss...

Re: Luck Kind of Sucks
Just curious. Could this issue be exasperated by too little XP being given out? First level chars vs an ogre should be some nice xp even in an old school scenario. Admittedly the characters did have a prior adventure where they failed to find almost any treasure. But, I'd note that under the Basic ...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
Not really sure where to put this random thought, but it doesn't seem to need its own thread and we are hopefully about to get a higher level cleric spell... We've found that a -1 (or spell level) penalty for every attempted spell or lay-on-hands use is pretty harsh on the cleric. Instead I've insti...
