Re: Goblinoid & Troglodyte alignment
I don't understand the problem Goblins and Troglodytes can be lawful. They will use order and discipline to wipe the stinky humans off the face of the planet. Unlike those stupid orcs who will attempt the same thing in a disorderly, undisciplined manner. (Pathetic creatures, right?) How is that hard...

I'm guessing bill is correct. Amazon sell at a discount that could well kill Goodman's already slim margin on the book. When you consider that it's a very heavily illustrated book of thick, quality paper stock, hardcover, woven and glued in binding, heavy and thick (say hello to greater distributio...

Re: Creature Catalog
This book sounds interesting but it also sounds a bit disjoint. Why would a "Creature Catalog" have Mighty Deeds, Hex-based tabletop combat rules, and Patrons in it? At 250+ pages already, perhaps you should consider breaking it up into multiple products. Personally, selling a 250+ page PD...

Re: Limits to Spell Burn?
I think this is the simple solution to any casting of the Patron spells. They SHOULD require an immediate quest afterward so spellburning those spells means going on a quest with spellburn penalties. After that, let the wizard do as he wishes.Raven_Crowking wrote:patron-imposed quests.

Re: DCC Alignment question
Hobgoblins have been lawful evil since 1e AD&D and there are standard D&D campaign settings where Hobgoblins form walled communities and trade with the "good" races.
It's orcs and ogres that are the brutish, chaotic types.

Don't even start with the art. I can go on for days on how the look of D&D has gone to s#!+. One of the reasons I can't stand Pathfinder either is the art. WotC and Paizo use the same fricking artists. It's hard to explain but their art reminds me of the 4e powers, uninspired & boring homog...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
I am happy to agree that "the first rule of good gaming is having a good GM", but that doesn't prevent me from wanting to offer the tools to help make a mediocre GM good, a good GM great, and a crappy GM a little less crappy. I'm going to nitpick this. A good ruleset can lift up the avera...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
What I've been driven to with TA/TG is formulating tools to promote emergent play between adventures. "What's next" is defined by where the players are at the end of their last adventure and what happens to them on their way to the next one. There's also some work to be done fleshing out ...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
Based on my reading of RPG forums, long term campaigning has less to do with the game system and more to do with player commitment and group stability. Do you think that those things have nothing to do with the system used? No, I just think the system is a way less important part than you do (proba...

And don't forget to read the original "Pelucidar" stories by Edgar Rice Boroughs for inspiration. That author was so ahead of his time! I never read Pelucidar but had the joy of all of the John Carter and Tarzan books. At the Earth's Core was actually the first ERB novel I read, borrowed ...

Re: DCC is DDNext
My current draw for DCC is the artwork. My old school style need is currently being filled by Old School Hack. It is wonderfully simple. But I enjoy lots of different style games. I play RISUS and I play Champions. You can't get a wider level of light to heavy rulesets there I think. DCC is your DDN...

I have a friend who started a 1e AD&D game in 1984. After a while he grafted on the Runequest skill system. While that game was running, he ran an online game (in the mid-90s no less) 500 years in the future using GURPS 3 rules. In 1998, I joined the AD&D1 game and remained with the game thr...

LotR more complex (add in Saruman in the middle but working both ends) but either system could work well for a Middle-earth campaign. I don't see LotR as anything resembling complex. It's almost black and white in simplicity. Saruman is a small special case because he was usurped by Sauran. He was ...

Re: Critical Successes and Fumbles
On the subject at hand, I do try to explain to my players why I feel I should trump the rules either in their favor or not. Optimally, the players should not be aware of the rules at a level where they can tell when you are not using them. This is GM skill that requires experience and practice. But...

The classic caravan guard turned on its ear can work. It also explains why 15-20 people might need to work together. Just have them all a part of a traveling group (pilgrims, traders, etc). In the pre-game background they get captured by slavers and you can throw them directly into a dungeon crawl s...

Deeds are still a big trade off damage-wise, aren't they? Your attack die isn't added to the damage roll if used for a Deed. Expect maybe I'm confused on that rule, as I can't find it now when I look. Did I invent that? That was an interpretation of the Beta rules that was bandied about here for a ...

Thanks. I posted it over at enworld and the 4e players didn't think it was funny. They're kind of touchy. That's because it doesn't map perfectly. It also excludes the 3e/pf players who dial up to 20. But for 4e, 30 is 10 more paragon PLUS 10 more epic than just 10. See the difference there? And ye...
