Re: Just houserule it

My experience has been the opposite. I agree. My players are so much more engaged in the imagination of the situation in my 1e campaign than they were in my 3e campaign. There's less rules discussion, generally faster resolution, more stuff done in a session, more freedom for the players to try "ou...

Re: Save or die

To further extend out what you have written here. In a long term campaign where you have hundreds of hours invested in your character, save and die is a tough pill to swallow. In general, I prefer to have save-or-die effects in my rpgs, but I didn't always feel that way, and I think my opinion vari...

Re: Warrior mechanics

Such a guideline book's gonna be the first needed expansion to the DCC RPG either by GG or a 3PP. Many of today's GMs are 3.x / Pathfinder / 4E gamers (i.e., used to having a rule at every turn, either in the book or online). I agree that many refs may be coming from a "rule for every circum...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

What I am saying is that any reference to MDoA and grappling needs to be removed from this thread. Or are we willing to say only Warriors can grapple? I do not think that people would want to go that far. I would honestly say that a Thief has more reason to grapple than a fighter if he is trying to...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

I am going to ask a (possibly silly) question here? Isn't MDoA a Warrior class ability? Does that apply to Wizards, Thief and Cleric classes? Yes, MDoA is a warrior class ability, and as such, isn't available to other classes. (Based on the DunDraCon playtest, anyway.) I was originally presented as...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

grappling [can be anywhere between] WAY to effective or not worth doing (i.e. you have to burn through HP's first) Yes, that's the key. It's tricky to get explicit grappling rules right, especially in a way that preserves the flavor of the inspirational material at both high and low levels in a typ...

Re: Class/Alignment combo mechanics?

At the DunDraCon playtest, there were three "titles" of thieves, or maybe four, with the title being determined by the character's alignment, and each title determining how the thief advances in all of his various abilities. So multiple alignments qualified for each title, and each title was essenti...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

I don't disagree with your additional assertions: Some methods of attack should bias toward a foe's death, while other sorts of attack should bias toward incapacitation without death (some sort of submission). (And perhaps the bias is strong-to-absolute.)

Re: Grappling in DCC?

Well, it depends on what "hit points" represent. Subdual damage has always been a sticking point for D&D. So does a character "die" at zero hit points? Or just go unconscious? Ignore the questions of what happens at zero hit points. That small of a detail isn't relevant to my question. Your questio...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

Realistically speaking if 10 guards charged you at once, you would go down in a pile (Conan excluded). So requiring that they go through your HP before you are captured is not realistic from a game perspective. Should that also be true if the guards just went for conventional melee attacks? (That i...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

By "grappling" I mean engaging an opponent in an attempt to restrain or immobilize them. These days I'm not fond of there being a general mechanism in a D&D-like game by which any arbitrary character can essentially defeat an opponent while ignoring that opponent's hit points. (However, class-speci...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

When most players tell me that they want their character to grapple, that's not really what they mean ... or at least not completely what they mean. So what do you mean, smathis? What do you foresee the characters doing via the "grappling rules?" By answering that, I think it's easier to find out wh...

Re: Warrior mechanics

My biggest beef with D&D levels is the breakage that begins around 12-15th level and then progressively gets worse. And that really only became apparent to me while playing 3e <tangent>I think that's because the breakage didn't exist prior to 3e, assuming I'm thinking about the same breakage you're...

Re: DCC RPG Playtest at DunDraCon 2011

That makes sense. I suspected People of the Pit was less-linear than what we saw, so that's great, I'm really looking forward to it.

I'll also dig around to see if I can find that other playtest report...

Re: DCCRPG Playtest at GenghisCon 2011

I just don't want it to happen based on one class of character being seen as defective or too dangerous to have in an adventuring party. No one would play a wizard if they knew that at any moment the rest of the party might turn on them just because they flubbed too many spells and injured the part...

Re: DCC RPG Playtest at DunDraCon 2011

It wasn't so much the amount of stuff recorded on the character sheet. (Pretty comparable to an AD&D amount.) It was that the character sheet info needed to be looked-up more frequently. Compared to AD&D/OD&D, the DCC RPG has more consultation of the character sheet to determine miscellaneous modifi...

According to Joe at the DunDraCon demo, the answer is no. Spellburnt attributes recover at the rate of 1/day. (Not sure if it's 1/day on each depleted attribute vs. 1/day to a single depleted attribute.)

DCC RPG Playtest at DunDraCon 2011

I played in Joe's DCC RPG playtest on Sunday. It was a blast! Joe is a great ref, and was a pleasure to talk to! Someone took pictures and mentioned to Joe that they may get posted on facebook I think, but I haven't seen them show up yet on the Goodman Games facebook page or the DCC RPG facebook pag...
